Our ship exits Beagle Channel to the east and rounded
southward to Cape Horn. Then we turned around and headed towards Falkland
Island. Here are two views of the navigation chart.
Cape Horn is the southernmost point of South
America. It was named by the Dutch navigator Willem Schouten after his
birthplace Hoorn in the Netherlands as he first rounded the cape in 1616.
This notorious cape has wrecked hundreds of vessels during the time of sailing
ships, as the sailing ships are vulnerable to the prevalent strong winds, heavy
seas and strong currents.
