Slot canyons are formed by water
carving through sandstones. Some slot canyon are so narrow that a person can
barely fit through. They are found in many parts of the world. Some of the most
well known slot canyons are found in this area of American Southwest. On our way
to Page via route 89, we turned off at House Rock Valley Road which leads to
Wire Pass through 10 miles of worse unpaved road ever.
Pass is a short drainage slot canyon that joins the much longer,
deeper and wider Buckskin
Gulch slot canyon. From
the trailhead the
canyon is accessed through a wide, meandering streambed
over soft sand that makes progress difficult. It took us a while to reach the
Pass is so narrow parts of which are less than 3 feet wide. You can touch both
sides of the canyon at the same time.
