This project is to rebuild the run-down school buildings so that the education
for the students can be continued.
Background. This is the poorest area in
Inner Mongolia. As the local economy deteriorates, population shrinks and
people move out to seek opportunities. The local government combined 4
elementary schools and one middle school to form Shi Lan Ji School. There
are 486 students. Among the 32 teachers, 22 have college degree and the
quality of education was actually quite good. I was told that almost 90%
of the graduates went on to college studies, which is amazing given the local
conditions. The problem is that after the 1997 earthquake (6.4 scale),
most of the school buildings are damaged. They could collapse anytime and
endanger the students. A rebuilding project is desperately needed.
Location. The school is located in the
western-most end of Ulate Zhong Banner (乌拉特中旗,
equivalent to a county). The school serves a population of 1,305
households with 6,787 farmers.
Opening Ceremony. We arrived at the school
for the opening ceremony.
After the formality and ribbon cutting, we took some
